As in the other games and expansion packs in the series, the gameplay consists of controlling your Sims’ lives completely – or almost completely – as they unfold. Throughout them, your Sims will face situations as diverse as having to buy or build a house, get a job or start getting into the world of dating.

Initially, the game did not have a defined storyline, but later expansion packs and add-ons were released that included challenges for the Sims, giving them missions to complete or careers to pursue. The game remains, above all, a ‘Sandbox’ type game, which gives you endless possibilities to decide what your Sims should do with their lives.

However, there is the possibility that your Sims may resist unexpectedly, as if they were children: some of these quirks are more character issues, such as going on a date in a bar and choosing to sit at the opposite end of the bar from their companion, having to shout through the crowd to start the flirting; while others just seem to be personal quirks, such as avoiding using the nearest trash can and continuing to walk for a few minutes until they find another one they prefer! You’ll find these quirks most endearing and they’ll keep your interest in the game alive: it would be boring if everyone did just what you asked them to do!

What’s new?

This game takes place in a different setting to others in the series, offering new neighbors and terrain to players, both new to the series and veterans returning to inject new life into their existing Sims.

Left on their own, Sims will now be able to perform more than one task at a time, as long as those tasks are feasible to perform simultaneously, such as listening to music while doing the dishes, or chatting while watching TV. They cannot, for example, write a novel at the same time as ironing clothes.

The game also features moods, called moodlets, which tell you what state of mind your Sims are in: they can be calm and relaxed, really angry, or even really excited. Moodlets will make your Sims’ plans feel much more real: feeling excited about going on a date, for example, will give the atmosphere a totally different vibe as your Sim prepares to go on it.

A bit of history

The inspiration for the creation of this game came from a real-life home reconstruction experience. Will Wright, the game’s developer, lost his home and all his possessions due to a fire, being forced to rebuild his entire life from scratch. It was during that process that he came up with the idea of a game based on a ‘virtual dollhouse’ and, after some tweaking, what we know today as the Sims emerged.

As is often the case with many innovative ideas that after the fact give the impression of always having been a safe bet, Wright’s idea was rejected by the first publishers to whom he offered the game. Fortunately, the second publisher to whom he presented his ideas was surprised with the concept and got to work.

CAS System (Create a Sim)

Customizing your Sims and making them unique will be easier than ever in this edition of the game, allowing you to carry out highly detailed modifications to a large number of aspects, such as:

The tummy – do you want your Sim to sport a flat, slim and curvy belly, or a cute little tummy? The decision is up to you.
Chest – do you want your male Sims to be thick and beefy, or stick thin? Do you want your female Sims to have a moderate bust or big, huge breasts? The game allows you to adjust the attributes of your Sims to detail
Arms/ Legs – give your Sims long limbs so they can run far or reach the highest shelves, or keep them small and sturdy so that even grocery shopping is a challenge for them!
Feet – if you’re a foot lover, then you can rejoice with your Sims, giving them slender, perfect feet that you can admire, whether they’re in sneakers or barefoot.
Fitness – from a gym junkie to a couch potato, choose the level of fitness you want for your Sims and let them do their thing, whether it’s working out or lounging around, according to their tastes.
Corpulence – Body positivity comes to Sim land. Use the slider to give your Sims smooth curves or make them drop up to ten pounds instantly just by dragging a slider – if only it were that easy in real life!
